Joe Average

Emily met Joe on They both liked the SF Giants. They both lived in Livermore, although he worked in Alameda and had to get up early at 4:00 a.m. for his job.  Joe made an exception to stay up late one night so he could meet Emily and buy her dinner.

Emily had looked forward to meeting Joe, but all he did was bitch about his wife. That’s right – he wasn’t divorced yet, just separated. This went on and on, with Joe only stopping long enough to ask Emily what she did for a living. Then, after a big slurp of water, Joe jumped right back on the bitching wagon.

As he droned on, Emily stared at Joe, wondering what he was doing on a dating site so soon. She finished up her dinner and waited until the waiter asked them if they’d like to order dessert.

“I have to go,” she said when Joe picked up the dessert menu to study it.

“Can we do this again?” Joe asked.

Emily paused to gather her words. Joe was probably a nice guy and all that, but he wasn’t ready to be on a date.

“I think you have a lot of stuff to work out,” she said. “Thanks, anyway.”

Emily thanked Joe for dinner, picked up her purse and high-tailed it out of there.

Couldda Wouldda Shouldda

Emily should’ve asked Joe on the phone if he was separated, legally separated, and if he had filed for divorce or if his spouse had filed. It could’ve saved her an awkward dinner, and Joe could’ve used the date money to talk to a therapist.
