FIRST DATE, WORST DATE EVER!

Alice got a teaching job in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She decided to live across the Missouri River in Omaha in an old Victorian that had been converted into apartments. A military guy from Maryland moved in upstairs. She ran into him in the hallway after a bike ride one evening when he was coming back from a recruiting gig.

Jim asked Alice if he could take her on a date. She was engaged to Norm, but there was something about the guy from upstairs. She said yes, and they went out to dinner. It was February.

It wasn’t long before Alice realized that her fiance was cheating on her. Once at his trailer, Alice answered Norm’s phone, and a woman asked for him. The woman said Norm had told her that he loved her.

Alice woke up and smelled the coffee. The Marine was looking better and better. She continued to date James while Norm told Alice he didn’t have time to spend with her on the weekends.

Finally, in April, Alice broke off the engagement. Norm had been getting verbally and physically abusive. Alice ran into the arms of her Marine and soon moved in with him. Why have two apartments when they were spending all their free time together? By May she was engaged again, this time to James.

James and Alice got married in August and had a 21-gun military salute at the wedding.  Her teacher friends came all the way from Council Bluffs and Omaha to attend the wedding in her hometown of Albia, Iowa.

James got stationed in lots of places, and Alice was happy to move with him. They lived in Woodbridge, Va, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Charlottesville, Virginia, Okinawa, Japan, and Springfield, Virginia.

Their first baby arrived 27 years ago. Two more followed, two girls and at last, a boy to follow in his dad’s footsteps and go into the military.

Here they are, still together after thirty-five years. Alice is so glad she moved into that Victorian apartment near the Mutual of Omaha sign in downtown Omaha, Nebraska.
