Ladies and, well, mostly ladies! Finally, a show for us post-menopausal gals, the likes of which haven’t been seen since The Golden Girls or Grace and Frankie.
What is the Golden Bachelor, you ask? Take a 71 year old widower and put him in a room with 20-some females between the ages of 60 and 75 and you have a reality show for us seniors.
“Why would you want to watch that?” a senior guy friend asked me.
Are you kidding? To watch a bunch of women my age fighting for the guy? What could be better? And do you know what? The women are nice to each other. They’ve been through the ups and downs of life. Many are grandmas, many widows. They have empathy and group hugs, and it’s really charming.
All except Kathy, who didn’t like Teresa boasting about her great connection with Gerry (pronounced with a hard G). She told Teresa not to kiss and tell, which sent Teresa into a crying fit and got Kathy voted off the island. Actually, Gerry decided not to give Kathy a rose that week, which meant bye-bye.
People say it’s all scripted, and I think the women definitely get coached to act one way or another. Like the talent show, where the winner read a clever poem and then decided she needed to be home with her daughter who had a two-week old baby. Another woman missed her daughter’s wedding so that she could do the show.
I mean come on, people! No matter how much you want to be on reality TV, missing your daughter’s wedding or first baby seems just plain WRONG.
Back to the show. We are now down to three women. Gerry picked the two youngest plus age-appropriate and weepy Teresa, and went to Hometown Week to meet each family. Then the final two roses. He gave one to Leslie, who got him to say he loved her (go Leslie!), but then he couldn’t give the 2nd rose. He left crying. So it’s a cliff hanger until next week. Will the rose go to Faith or Teresa? At this point, it looks like Leslie has it in the bag.
I think there’s got to be something wrong with this guy. Does he have $50,000 in gambling debts? Does he secretly collect porn, or is he super controlling? Why has he been single for the last five or so years? How did ABC pick him? Will the show come back as the Golden Bachelorette, with Faith or Teresa meeting a bunch of senior guys?
Will ABC continue to provide shows for post-menopausal women? Some of us are tuning in just to see if the other women our age have had a face lift, have crepey skin on their underarms, still wear shorts, or wear too much make-up? Or not enough?
I’ve never enjoyed a reality TV show as much as the Golden Bachelor. I think the dresses, the activities, the camaraderie and the hair styling have been interesting. Funny how the only one with short hair, Susan, who is a hair dresser, never got a one-on-one date, even though Gerry told her that her spirit was the most like his late wife’s. He told her she was “the best” when he voted her off the island two weeks ago. What’s up with that?
The mystery continues. Tune in next week to see whether Faith or Teresa goes home.
