Book Betrayal

I just finished a book, a novel, one published twenty-two years ago. I found the author a few months back and have read nine or ten of her titles. She writes from multiple points of view –there’s always a judge, a prosecutor, a defense attorney, a budding romance somewhere, and the protagonist and appropriate family members. Each character gets to tell his or her point of view as the chapters bounce back and forth between involved parties.

Jody Picoult is an excellent writer. I am noticing certain repetitive phrases that she uses in every book, and the plot lines have also repeated a little bit. But the writing is good, fast-paced, and pretty great, although she probably won’t in any literary awards. Forgive me if you have, Jodi.

I ignored my neighbor’s phone calls last night, because she tends to go on for an hour, and I just couldn’t stop reading to listen to her. Today, after doing some yard work that was making my neck goofy (dizziness, lightheadedness), I decided to call it a day and go finish the book. I read from 2:15 to 5:30 and finished it.

The ending was a HUGE disappointment when Jodi killed off the main character. She hasn’t done that since, in any of her other books I’ve read with later pub dates.

Here are some of the titles I’ve read by her:

Harvesting the Heart

Plain Truth

Songs of the Humpback Whale

My Sister’s Keeper

Nineteen Minutes

The Tenth Circle

Leaving Time

House Rules

Sing You Home

Mercy

I’ve bought all the books at second-hand book stores or thrift stores for a dollar or two. I don’t know what I’ll do when I finish them all.

How does she keep all the characters straight as she goes back and forth with each point of view chapter to advance the story?

Maybe she needs a transgender story to help people understand what it is. Most don’t have a clue. Are you listening, Jodi? I know you can do it.

Please don’t kill off any more main characters. I trusted you for 400 pages, and you let me down.
